And breathe… creating a sanctuary in your cubicle

creating a tranquil cubicle
Why shouldn’t your cubicle be a haven of peace and tranquility?

Did you know that you spend around a third of your life at work? That’s a long time to spend in a place that isn’t perfect for your needs.

Workplace stress can be caused (or at least made worse) by a cluttered, busy desk. That being the case, is there any way you can stop this madness?

Thankfully, yes, there is. There are a number of small things you can do to turn your office desk or cubicle into a sanctuary of pure professionalism and zen-like calm. Get a handle on your stress levels, boost your productivity and make your desk the envy of your colleagues by following some of these simple nuggets of wisdom.

How to transform your desk into a sanctuary

Declutter

First things first – your desk will never be a sanctuary if you can’t find what you’re looking for. It’s time for a clear out!

Remove everything from your desk (yes, everything!) and start from scratch. Assign object into piles depending on priority – bin or shred outdated documents, file and store those documents and objects you need regularly but not daily and give pride of place on your desk to those absolutely essential items.

This gives you a blank slate to start from and the clear out will help you clear your mind too.

Mood lighting

Now that your desk is free of clutter, adjust the mood using lighting. If your office has overhead lighting this can be tricky but by adding just one lamp, you can “sculpt” the lighting on your desk and remove some of the fluorescent harshnesses.

Home from home

Just because it’s work doesn’t mean it has to be uncomfortable. Some photos of family or your pets can remind you of life outside of the office and a small plant or two can remind you of nature. If you’re not great at looking after plants, opt for a succulent – they require a lot less feeding and watering.

Choose your soundscape

If the office is noisy, introduce your own sounds. Pop in your headphones and put on some chilled music, or opt for sound background noise using one of the many apps available as browser extensions. Some white noise, lapping waves or falling rain provide a non-distracting background noise that can help you concentrate.

Ceremonial food and drink

Turn your tea and coffee breaks into a little ceremony that lets you unwind. Instead of rushing to the kitchen to grab a coffee that you drink without thinking; instead, use your favourite mug and a small tray and keep part of your desk just for this. Remind yourself that this is a break away from work and you’ll start relaxing in no time.
